Starting in the Fall of ’07, the Bicycle Songcycle was created as part-senior project / part-homage to Sufjan Stevens’ “Come on Feel the Illinoise”. It is a concept album, or song cycle, about the historical, social, and personal wonders of bicycles. Musically, it draws inspiration from the old-timey cabaret styles of the late 19th/early 20th century. Almost all the songs stemmed from compositional obstructions given to me by my professor Dave Amrein. Click here for audio samples and lyrics |

This album stands as a triptych on love — romantic, filial, and creative — and how the three can never seem to exist in harmony, but will always exist as hindrances, catalysts, and rebounds to each other. Sonically, I believed this is best channeled into the teenage angst of oldies songs and arrangements. Most of these songs are the first I ever wrote through Songwriting class and the ACM Chicago Arts Program. I also call this album “Gay Songs For My Friends” cause there’s a lot of that.
